Fotonation Driver

KARIYA, Japan, — Automotive technology supplier Denso Corp. has announced joint technology agreement to develop cabin sensing innovations with image recognition technology developer FotoNation Ltd., a subsidiary of Xperi Corp.

The partnership will help Denso improve the performance of its Driver Status Monitor, an active safety product currently used in commercial vehicles. Improvements of such products also will accelerate the development of next-generation products to be used in passenger vehicles, including a system to help drivers transition back to manual driving mode during Level 3 of autonomous driving.

Denso's Drive Status Monitor detects a driver's face angle, the length they keep their eyes closed, and head position to determine if a driver is in danger of falling asleep or distracted behind the wheel. If the monitor detects that the driver may be distracted or drowsy, a warning will appear and/or the system might adjust the direction of the side mirrors and information displays to improve overall safety, comfort and convenience.

The collaboration will combine Denso's experience in cabin sensing innovations with FotoNation's facial image recognition and neural network technologies. The agreement aims to achieve sophisticated driver status detection, which will not be affected by differences between individual faces or by sunglasses, masks and other facial coverings in the vehicle cabin where environmental light changes dramatically.

Using FotoNation's facial image recognition and neural networks technologies will allow detection of more features instead of using the conventional detection method based on the relative positions of the eyes, nose, mouth and other facial regions.

Denso will develop new functions, such as those to detect the driver's gaze direction and facial expressions more accurately, to understand the state of mind of the driver in order to help create more comfortable vehicles.

The agreement includes a cross-license of Safran Identity & Security's and FotoNation's relevant patented iris capture, recognition and control technologies for enabling delivery of a unique and high-performance system for mobile devices. This joint solution, named BioNetra, will accurately and reliably verify subject identity under a broad range of lighting and environmental conditions. 150 Lucius Gordon Drive West Henrietta, NY 14586. 'Understanding the status of the driver and engaging them at the right time is an important component for enabling the future of autonomous driving,' said Yukihiro Kato, senior executive director of the information and safety systems business group of Denso. 'I believe this collaboration with Xperi will help accelerate our innovative ADAS product development by bringing together the unique expertise of both our companies.'

'We are excited to partner with Denso to innovate in such a dynamic field,' said Jon Kirchner, CEO of Xperi. 'This partnership will play a significant role in paving the way to the ultimate goal of safer roadways through use of our imaging and facial analytics technologies and Denso's vast experience in the space.'

Denso is a global automotive supplier of advanced automotive technology and components in the areas of thermal, powertrain control, electronics and information and safety. FotoNation is a developer of next-generation computational imaging algorithms.

Rochester, NY – May 14, 2018 – D3 Engineering today announced its DesignCore™ Driver Monitoring System (DMS) Development Kit. The production-intent kit features industry-leading algorithms from FotoNation, running on D3’s proven DesignCore™ rugged vision platform with a Texas Instruments TDA3x advanced vision processor, and two D3 camera modules with 2MP sensors.

FotoNation will demonstrate the DesignCore™ DMS kit at AutoSensin Detroit, MI May 14-17, 2018 and TU Automotive Detroit 2018 in Novi, MI June 6-7, 2018.

The DesignCore DMS kit is a fully-contained DMS solution with both hardware and algorithms. Easy to set up and use, it enables true evaluation of DMS technology—and provides a clear path to production for both integrated-dashboard and after-market DMS solutions.

The DesignCore DMS Kit supports automotive use cases for Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous vehicles, ensuring that the driver is ready to take over at any time. It also supports additional use cases such as operator authentication and drowsiness detection, which are advantages for both automotive and industrial autonomous systems.

FotoNation algorithms—including eye gaze tracking, face detection, head position tracking, and 3D facial feature detection—enable state-of-the-art attentiveness assessment and fatigue detection. The kit is biometrics-ready with both face and iris recognition, enabling in-cabin security and customization based on driver identity.

“We are pleased to partner with FotoNation, a clear leader with a strong history in algorithm development for biometrics and facial detection and tracking,” said Jerome Barczykowski, product manager for autonomous systems at D3 Engineering. “FotoNation’s Deep Learning based technology performs with great accuracy. The continually expanding database allows for a robust embedded driver monitoring and driver identification solution with our DesignCore platforms.”

The D3 DesignCore™ RVP-TDA3x electronics control unit (ECU) integrates a TDA3x advanced vision processor from Texas Instruments into a production-intent design. The TDA3x SoC processor is a cost-effective and powerful solution for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), with the optimal mix of performance, low power and vision analytics for entry- to mid- segment automobiles to meet or exceed NCAP requirements.

Two D3CM camera modules enable driver monitoring and iris tracking. The cameras feature a 2MP sensor and IR illumination for operation in all lighting conditions, as well as an RGB LED for user feedback during system development.

“We are excited to work with D3 Engineering on a development platform for our DMS solution,” said Pradeep Bardia, senior director, business development – DMS at Xperi, parent company of FotoNation. “This new development kit will allow our customers the opportunity to develop against our system and the ability to deliver a product quicker to market.”

Engineers developing automotive or industrial systems can use the kit to quickly evaluate and demonstrate the technology in the lab or in a vehicle. D3 Engineering supports rapid development of industrial engineering verification test (EVT) units or automotive A-Samples based on this production-intent design. D3 also provides full system development services to help companies take DMS products to market faster, with less risk.
